Willis Barnstone is a poet, and also renowned for his translations of Classical Greek poetry. Now he has tried his hand at translating the New Testament, which he calls The New Covenant, which is an exact translation of its Greek title: Kaine diatheke. He presents this foundational book of Christianity in a way that does full justice to its deep poetical qualities. Substantial parts of the Old Testament have long been recognised as verse rather than prose, and many translations have taken account of this. Barnstone goes much farther. In his New Covenant, which contains the four Gospels and the Apocalypse, but not the Acts and the Letters, he renders in free verse all the passages purporting to be Jesus's words -- for instance, the Sermon on the Mount. Similarly for the words of John the Baptist, and the whole of the Apocalypse (The Revelation of John). Many readers, like me, will find that the familiar texts appear in a new light. Barnstone's aim is to create in his English readers the same impression as the original Greek does to the Greek-speaking ones. Most of the many Jews in the cities of Egypt and Asia minor had at that time Greek as their mother tongue. One essential feature of Barnstone's translation of the New Covenant is to render all names of persons and places in its Hebrew or Aramaic form: Jesus (Greek Iesous) as Jeshua, Jerusalem as Yerushalayim. He underlines that the New Covenant is a Jewish book. Jesus was of course a Jew, and so were most of the early Christians. They were an integral part of the Jewish community, by now spread over most of the Eastern Mediterranean area. Contrasting Jews and Christians was a propagandist trick of later writers, who were eager to distance themselves from other Jew .Thus they planted the seeds of Christian anti-semitism. I think Barnstone has taken the right decision on this point. The book also contains a Foreword of some 20 pages, and an afterword of 120 pages, where Barnstone places his translation in the wider context of Biblical studies. Further, the book has footnotes explaining obscurities and various points of translation. But they are never obtrusive. In his comments Barnstone avoids polemics, and reveals himself as a well-informed and urbane liberal-minded scholar. He stresses that the gospel narratives find little or no confirmation in historical accounts. Somewhat surprisingly, he goes on to say that Jesus's crucifixion by the Roman authorities must be regarded as an established fact. This is certainly the opinion of the large majority of New Testament scholars. But there is by no means unanimity on this point. However, this is a minor matter. All in all, Barnstone succeeds extremely well in making his readers approach the New Testament with fresh eyes, shifting attention from points of doctrine and historicity, on to what is common to great religious poetry all over the world: its power to inspire feelings of hope and joy, and at the same time to convey a sense of the mystery of human existence. This is a superb achievement.

David Spangler has been a spiritual writer, thinker, and teacher for more than thirty~five years. Blessing is the book that his students, readers, and colleagues have been waiting for him to write. It's the seminal book on a topic that hasn't been examined in depth before. What is a blessing? It's not unlike a prayer or a good deed. It can be rooted in the sacred: a request that God grant us grace. It can be rooted in the material: a wish for someone's health and prosperity. It can be rooted in relationship: a desire for our children's safety and happiness. It can be a sharing of our inner strength with a family member who is ill, a friend who is going through a divorce, or a homeless stranger. Or it can be a telegram, if you will, of our inner energy to people and places far away from us, in support of peace and hope and freedom. A blessing can be anything ~a kind word, a prayer or ritual, a gesture, an embrace, a gift~that represents the breath and blood of our goodwill. The Art of Blessing is the definitive book on how to channel our natural sense of compassion, how to do good. It begins by exploring the practice of blessing, the many transcendent ways~ both ordinary and sacred~in which we can help each other. You don't have to be a minister, rabbi, or priest to bless someone, Spangler argues. He goes deeper then, examining the heart and soul of blessing, the ways in which the art of blessing can serve us and serve others in our everyday work and play, and in our most sacred pursuits. He also includes an extensive workbook section, invaluable for seekers of all levels and backgrounds in developing and focusing rituals of blessing as part of their own spiritual practice. There are exercises that help our minds and our spirits approach the act of blessing, that help us cultivate what David Spangler calls our "blessing place." There are also examples of blessings to guide and inspire us on everything from blessing a place~like a room in our home~to blessing a person~like a loved one who needs some extra support~to blessing a thing~like a friend's new business venture. This is a book that helps us answer an ancient human calling, because on the most basic level. we all want life to be on our side, bringing us good things, and shielding us from harm, from fear, from loneliness. We all want to be blessed. And in our better moments, we want to be a blessing for others.

He combines a complete grasp of the teachings of this tradition with an openness and kindness that has endeared him to all those fortunate enough to have come to know him." ~Philip Glass "Gehlek Rimpoche's teaching is concise and soulful; here, tradition is saved only to strengthen the daily path of liberation. Answering Allen Ginsberg's query, Rimpoche once observed that poetry is compassion. We may learn from Rimpoche's writings that compassion is also poetry." ~Francesco Clemente. ~It's what everyone wants to know: Do I survive death? And if so, where do I go? What do I become? Gehlek Rimpoche, educated in a 2,500~year~old study of reincarnation, can help us examine the four questions most of us ask ourselves: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? How do we get there? He shares his own experience, as well as techniques tested over the course of two and a half millennia that teach us how to take control over our lives and our fears, now and for the future. Good Life, Good Death discusses the physical reality of dying, the mental reality, where we go after death, and how we can know ahead of time where we're going. It shows how Einstein's theories can help us understand Buddhist mechanics of living and dying, and how to create a good life that will ultimately lead to a good death. "Gehlek Rimpoche . is a great teacher." ~Robert A. F. Thurman, professor of religion, Columbia University. "Gehlek Rimpoche is a heartfelt, tender teacher with a vast analytic mind."~Allen Ginsberg "Gehlek Rimpoche constantly shows wisdom, gentleness, depth, rascality, humor, spaciousness, and the spiritual side to everyday life."~Ram Dass. Trained by the same teachers who taught the Dalai Lama, Gehlek Rimpoche is one of the last reincarnated lamas alive who was fully educated in Tibet. He has been a favorite speaker at countless spiritual centers around the country. Covered in the pages of Interview magazine as well as the Buddhist journal Tricycle, among others, Rimpoche has been a research consultant at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, and an instructor of Tibetan at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Now an American citizen, he makes his home in Ann Arbor and New York City, and lectures around the world.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 333 pages. Published in 2005. The author's fourth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nick Hornby's "A Long Way Down". His darkest and in many ways, wisest novel. "In four distinct and riveting first-person voices, Nick Hornby tells a story of four individuals confronting the limits of choice, circumstance, and their own mortality. This is a tale of connections made and missed, punishing regrets, and the grace of second chances. Intense, hilarious, provocative, and moving, a novel about suicide that is, surprisingly, full of life" (Publisher's blurb). Nick Hornby's pulse on contemporary life is infallible, his humane-ness authentic, and both are especially evident in the suicidal reflections of his characters. Here is Martin: "Nearly every single time, the coroner says the same thing: 'He took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed'. And then you read the story about the poor bastard: His wife was sleeping with his best friend, he'd lost his job, his daughter had been killed in a road accident some months before. Hello, Mr. Coroner? I'm sorry, but there's no disturbed mental balance here, my friend. I'd say he got it just right" (Nick Hornby). An absolute "must-have" title for Nick Hornby collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Nick Hornby. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the E. M. Forster Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters. One of the finest British writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NICK HORNBY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1573223026.
