Paperback. Condition: Very Good. If you are told that you must follow a wheat, gluten or dairy free diet, where do you begin to work out what you can eat safely? One thing is for sure you will have to start cooking for yourself at home since there are very few ready meals available that will be suitable for your restricted diet. The simplest and safest course is to prepare your own meals, that way you will know for certain that your food does not include any hidden ingredients that might trigger your allergy or intolerance. Many people find cooking becomes a tyranny if they have to make family meals and then a small portion of allergy free food for one person. The recipes are smart, modern, international and anything but depriving by using alternative ingredients such as coconut milk and rice flour. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Tapas have become the most important phenomenon in Spanish culinary history and this movement is unstoppable due to the high quality Spanish cuisine promoted by the most important Spanish chefs, and this has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of Spanish restaurants in the five continents. In London there is an expanding array of tapas bars and restaurants such as Brindisa, Barrafina, Pizarro and Fino, sitting cheek-by-jowl with an equally growing number of informal, fun wine bars and brasseries. This book is an exclusive selection of the 25 best tapas bars/restaurants in London. It will feature a review of each bar and a selection of tapas recipes they serve, the history of tapas, an introduction to Spanish wines, a glossary of tapas terms. The objective is to contribute to the spread of tapas culture world-wide, in promoting both the consumption of Spanish products (i.e. ham, cheese, olives, wines, olive oil, preserves, etc.) and Spanish cookery itself. The audience for this guide will be any person whether living in London or just visiting from other parts of the UK or overseas, including the Spanish community and the Spanish tourists. Anyone interested in the fashionable tapas phenomenon and wishing to experience it in one of the most fashionable cities in the world: London. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Spitfire Pilot was written in 1940 in the heat of battle when the RAF stood alone against the might of Hitlers Third Reich. It is a tremendous personal account of one of the fiercest and most idealised air conflicts the Battle of Britain seen through the eyes of a pilot of the famous 609 Squadron, which shot down over 100 planes in that epic contest. Often hopelessly outnumbered, in their state of the art Spitfires, Crook and his colleagues committed acts of unimaginable bravery against the Messerschmidts and Junkers. Many did not make it and the author describes the absence they leave in the squadron with great poignancy. Spitfire Pilot is justly regarded as one of the classics of WWII and this new paperback edition, 66 years on, includes an introduction by the historian Richard Overy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Leslie Illingworth was one of the most distinguished British political cartoonists of the 20th century and remains for many 'the cartoonists' cartoonist. Yet though his career spanned more than 50 years - longer than either of his great contemporaries Sir David Low and Vicky - very little has been published about his life and works. Some of Illingworth's best cartoons were published for the "Daily Mail" during the Second World War (examples were even found in Hitler's bunker) and this book collects together for the first time 100 of his greatest to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict. Illingworth joined the "Daily Mail" soon after the war started, and remained with the paper for 30 years. A superb draughtsman and an acute political commentator, he also drew weekly for "Punch" for two decades. The magazine's editor Malcolm Muggeridge even felt that his cartoons were better than Low's: 'Illingworth's go deeper, becoming, at their best, satire in the grand style rather than mischievous quips'. A student under Sir William Rothenstein at the Royal College of Art during one of its most brilliant periods - fellow students included Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Eric Ravilious - he left to become full-time political cartoonist on Wales' national paper, the Western Mail, at the age of only 19. A founding member and the first President of the British Cartoonists' Association in 1966, he was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by the University of Kent in 1975. In addition he drew for American publications - including a famous cover for "Time" magazine - and was officially presented to US President L.B. Johnson in 1968. This unique collection is divided into chapters covering the war year-by-year and the book draws extensively on archive material held at the National Library of Wales and only recently catalogued in association with the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent. It also contains the first biography of Illingworth based on unique access to hitherto unavailable family records. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work contains one hundred biographies which were published in "The Daily Telegraph" during the past twenty years - men of the Navy, Marines and Fleet Air Arm, as well as the merchant fleet. They include such heroes as the Atlantic convoy commander Peter Gretton and the submariner Godfrey Place, VC; the yachtsman and U-boat hunter Stan Darling as well as the corvette commander Charles Cuthbertson, model for the captain in The Cruel Sea. Bill Sparks, the cockleshell hero, and Derek Pounds, who fought behind the lines in Korea, represent the pluck of the Marines while "Hooch" Williamson, who led the attack on Taranto, and Ken Pattison, who had the best claim to have sunk the Bismarck, demonstrate all the dash of the FAA. Written with humour and insight, here are tales of the derring-do, skilled seamanship and steady judgement which characterises the Senior Service. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Though the word vegetarianism was not coined until the mid-nineteenth century, the vegetarian diet has been around as long as man has. Vegetarians have included in their number: heretics, humanists, Hindus, Christian fundamentalists, radicals, agnostics, philosophers, founders of religion and even an Emperor. Not surprisingly vegetarians have often been discriminated against sometimes tortured, even killed for their beliefs. So the history of vegetarianism is also a history of dissidence and revolt. Colin Spencers comprehensive book, reissued in paperback for the first time in fifteen years explores the psychology of abstention from flesh and attempts to discover why omnivorous humans at times voluntarily abstain from an available food. The result is a thorough work of scholarship, entertaining in places, horrifying in others. The breadth of Spencers research is quite outstanding and makes for a truly erudite read. He begins in pre-history and ends in the present day. Colin Spencer is one of the countrys leading food historians but his prolific output has not been limited to this field alone. He has written nine novels, a dozen cookery books, has had six plays produced, as well as writing for television and film and was food columnist for The Guardian for thirteen years. He has also written two other Grub Street titles: British Food (9781908117038) and From Microliths to Microwaves (9781908117007). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Distant Thunder details the engrossing experiences of a helicopter pilot's tales of war told through letters that come straight from the heart. Often the author laboured well into the night after a mission still wearing the dusty flight suit which bore witness to the events he penned. Don Harward was torn between two worlds; his loyalty to his family and to his country. Like so many other soldiers, even on leave, he can always hear the dim roar of guns, the distant thunder of war, and is always summoned towards the sound. Pacific Wings, a prestigious New Zealand-based magazine, has previously published some letters which have been praised by a growing readership, both aviator and non flyer alike, for their ability to transport the reader into the world of war. Includes superb action photographs from Don's personal collection. An inspiring read. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
