Paperback. Condition: Very Good. These books are not simply pictures of what we can see from our car window, nor simply misty landscapes but photography which gets to the heart of both the landscape and its human component. While covering all the main attractions in an area the photographers have sought out the quirky, the curious and the unknown to give a new dimension to a land we all thought we knew. Argyll - the enduring heartland - with a coastline longer than that of France is one of the most beautiful counties in Scotland and also one of the most varied. From holiday towns on the Clyde to the stark grandeur of Ardnamurchan, from the great inland sea of Loch Awe to the flat plain of the Add - the Great Moss, its range of scenery is astonishing. The seat of the reputed Dark Age capital of the Kingdom of Scots, of romantic castles such as Stalker and Kilchurn, of great houses such as Inveraray, it is a landscape moulded by man from earliest times. This is the first photographic study to concentrate on a county which in many ways remains still a kingdom apart. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Glasgow humour has always been characterised by a scant regard for caution and reserve, and its extrovert and often surreal nature. No one exemplifies all these aspects better than Stanley Baxter, Glasgow's best known and greatest comic genius. In this book, Stanley Baxter looks back to the great days of Glasgow comedy. In a series of brilliantly funny sketches and anecdotes, he introduces a cast of typical Glasgow characters - the ladies of Bearsden, the Glasgow Italians, Gloria and Clara the waitresses, and Tattie Bacchante, amongst many others. He also explores Glasgow's unique class divisions; the glottal stops, the uvular 'r', the mysteries of Bachles, Nyaffs and Dreeps and those special Glasgow appurtenances of wigs, wallies and wellies. The result is a unique introduction to the people and language of this vibrant and colourful city. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Young Donald Peter Gillies, a Lovat scout soldier lies in hospital in Gallipoli in 1916, blinded by the Turks. There he falls in love with his Queen Alexandra Corps nurse, Louise, and she with him. The story moves back and forth from their time at the field hospital to the west highlands of Scotland where Donald grew up. As they talk in the quiet hours he tells her the stories of the coast and glens, how his family lived and the fascinating life of a century ago: bagpiping, sheep shearing, celidhs, illegal distilling, his mother saving the life of the people of St Kilda, the navvies building the west highland railway and the relationship between the lairds and the people. Louise in turn tells her own story of growing up in the Welsh valley: coal mining, a harsh and unforgiving upbringing. They get cut off from the allied troops and with another nurse are forced to make their escape through Turkey to Greece, getting rescued by a Coptic priest and ending up in Malta. By this time their love is out in the open, but there is still another tragic twist to their story waiting on the way back to Donalds beloved highland home . . . Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Although references to this famous order of military knights rarely appears in standard histories of the time, a great deal of information about them can be gleaned from other, more esoteric sources, such as sculpture and architecture.Suppressed by Philip of France out of greed, the Templars were gradually driven underground in more and more European countries. Yet they continued to exist, still guarding the knowledge and relics that they had gathered for the defence of the Holy Land. It is this that connects all this to Henry St Clair, Earl of Orkney and Grand Master of the Knights Templar and discoverer of America. All of these threads come together in one extraordinary scroll still in Kirkwall which reveals in full the secrets of the Knights Templar. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A Croft in the Hills, first published in 1960, is now acknowledged as a classic among Highland books. It captures, in simple, moving descriptions, what it was really like trying to make a living out of a hill croft near Loch Ness fifty years ago. A couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, immerse themselves in the practicalities of looking after sheep, cattle and hens, mending fences, baking bread and surviving the worst that Scottish winters can throw at them. Their neighbours are few, but among them they find the generosity and community spirit that has survived in the Highlands for generations. Working as a tight family unit, they learn to cope, and in time grow to love their little croft. As Neil Gunn writes in his Foreword, their lives gain extra dimensions that give the book its unusual quality, its brightness and its wisdom. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The first edition of this book rapidly topped the list of bestsellers and has continued to sell well, turning up in places as far away as German schlosses, Brisbane bedsides and Canadian log cabins! This latest edition brings the story of biting midges up to date with new material on the Highland midge, its biology and why it bites. Written in a highly readable but informed way, it describes how and why the midge plays such a dominant role in the ecology and human culture of the Highlands, not least in keeping the worst of human depredations under control. Armed with this book, you should be able to enjoy the splendours of the Highland summer without quite so many bites! Illustrated with cartoons by BAX. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Driftwood and Tangle is a moving and poignant memoir of life in the north-west of Scotland just after the outbreak of the Second World War. Margaret Leigh recounts the years she spent in Wester Ross, Moidart, Coigeach and Barra as a crofter, an activity which enabled her to experience the land in all its moods and capture the essence of this remote and beautiful part of Scotland in finely crafted prose. In addition to her evocative description of the land itself, she also has much to say about the people who live there - their traditions and way of life which, at the time of writing, were under threat not only because of the inevitable march of 'progress' but also because of a war likely to engulf even this remote corner of Europe. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the remarkable story of Donald Caskie, minister of the Scots Kirk in Paris at the time of the German invasion of France in 1940. Although he had several opportunities to flee, Caskie stayed behind to help establish a network of safe houses and escape routes for Allied soldiers and airmen trapped in occupied territory. This was dangerous work, and despite the constant threat of capture and execution, Caskie showed enormous resourcefulness and courage as he aided thousands of servicemen to freedom. Finally arrested and interrogated, he was sentenced to death at a Nazi show-trial, and it was only through the intervention of a German pastor that he was saved. After the war, Caskie returned to the Scots Kirk, where he served as minister until 1960. This inspiring story of selfless commitment to others in the face of extreme adversity is the legacy of a truly brave man. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
