Pictorial Hard Cover. Condition: Good. The cover has red cloth with beveled boards. No date of publication is given. The front blank page has an owner's name with a note about purchasing the book in 1888 from another owner. The text block ends have gilt. Scrambles Amongst the Alps, by Edward Whymper, has 164 pages, a frontispiece engraving in silver and white, 15 full page b/w engravings, and multiple in-text b/w engravings. The silver on the frontispiece has caused a beige coloring on the title page. Down the Rhine, by Lady Blanche Murphy, has 75 pages, 16 full page b/w engravings, and multiple in-text b/w engravings. This title is not of the book's cover. The spine strip's cloth has faded, has 1/8 in. size, brown stains, and its top edge is a little frayed. The front board has a decorative title block with dark green back ground color that is now a little mottled from shelf wear rubbing. The title's letters are in black and do not show well against the dark green back ground. Scans e-mailed upon request.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Edward Whymper (illustrator). Reprint. No date, ca. 1899, HARDCOVER. Original blue cloth with brown decorated front and gilt lettering and decoration spine, AEG, pattern decorated EPs, silver-tinted frontispiece illustration with frontis tissue still present. Two books in one, this was a highly marketed ploy to cash-in on the popularity of Whymper's classic book. The book is not dated but Neate's bibliography of mountaineering books gives the date of 1899 for the book. The book has some rubbing (mainly loss of color) to spine ends and corners, slight darkening to spine, cracked inside front hinge that is holding well due to the strong nature of the underlying cloth mesh, rear inside hinge is fine, old period US postage stamps adhered to front pastedown (see photo) otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding, no foxing, usual slight tanning to page paper. The book measures 237mm tall x 180mm and has 164 + 75 pages, many b/w engravings. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED FOR SALE.
