Book
Maroon Leather Hardback. Condition: Good. Third Edition. 1919. Third edition. xii, 609pp. All edges gilt. First published in 1882 in two volumes, this is a book about the peoples and customs of Burma (now Myanmar). It was published under the name Shway Yoe, a pseudonym of the Scottish journalist and British colonial administrator James George Scott. The book caused a sensation when it was first published because it was considered impossible that a Burman could write so well in English - Shway Yoe's unbiased tone and positive curiosity is also one reason that the author was presumed Burmese by the British. The work priovides a detailed description of the Burmese people and their culture, from their pagoda festivals to their lacquer, traditions, religion, dressing, food, etc. The book is bound in the original maroon full leather boards with gold titling and designs on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some scuffing to the leather on the boards and spine. The leather is thin and there is some damage and loss to the leather on the corner tips, top edge of the rear board, and both spine ends. The leather on the spine is tight-bound onto the text block and there is a split in the leather on the bottom 1 1/2" of the front spine edge and down the length of the spine. The spine is a bit delicate and would need to be handled carefully. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and an inscription dated 1930 on the front free endpaper.
