The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is mildly rubbed and has light wear at the tips and spine-ends; the original price is intact. A very nice copy of the author's third book. ".To the large body of literature dealing with the natural life of North America this book is a unique contribution. It is the first comprehensive history of American wildlife, from the time of the white man's arrival in the New World to the present. To fashion this valuable and fascinating chronicle, Peter Matthiessen has studied the accounts of explorers, settlers, and naturalists from the time of the first records. He tells of the great auk and of many other creatures, of how they vanished and where and why, and what is now being done that North America may not become a wasteland of man's creation, in which no wild thing can live. The book follows the tide of white settlement as it moved from the eastern seaboard in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, across the rivers, plains, and mountains to the Pacific. It tells of the fur trappers and whalers, the market hunters and the spoilers. Never before in a single volume has the story of our continent's original inhabitants been told with such dramatic detail and illustration." Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded. Cloth and boards. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Bob Hines (illustrator). First Edition. SIGNED by the Author, 4to, white quarter buckram with green and gold label & lettering over forest green cloth decorated with flying bird-bison-carribou-and swimming duck motives over boards, profusely illustrated with 8 full-color plates of works by--among others--Mark Catesby, Alexander Wilson, the Peale's, and John James Audubon, with 16 pages of B&W photographs, and more than 100 delineations by Bob Hines of "rare, extinct, or vanishing species," published with top page edges stained green for dust protection, Mylar-protected endpaper details from George Catlin, 304 pages. Author's SCARCE third book. SIGNED by the distinguished naturalist on the front decorative pastedown which has details by George Catlin. A splendid historical survey of "the white man's effect on wildlife in North America, from the earliest records to the present day"--from the Intro by Richard Pough. Matthiessen trained as a naturalist, and this work sets forth the broad dimensions of the environmental and social work that he undertook for the rest of his regrettably too short life (1927-2014). A solid, clean and generally Superior copy with minimal age-toning, bright, unfoxed illustrations, and a well preserved dj (unclipped) though it is rubbed and has some soil--especially evident on the rear panel. The rear panel also has a small (1/4") hole at 11 o'clock above the small reindeer. The cloth is characteristically somewhat tired. Slight 1"-square blemish on the top inner margin of the front endpaper caused by likely removal of a sticker.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Drawings by Bob Hines (cover painting is Albert Bierstadt's "The Buffalo Trail" (illustrator). 1st Edition. "Published in 1959 by the Viking Press, Inc." -- the first printing. Large octavo. Inscribed in blue ink "For Mr. & Mrs. Robin(?) Hanes" and signed "Peter" (first name only) by author Matthiessen to the Free Front Endpaper. Laid in is a 1961 typed letter on Viking Press letterhead, signed in red ink by Edwin Kennebeck of the Editorial Department, addressed to Previous Owner Charles H. Seaholm Jr. of Stratford, Conn., acknowledging "You are quite right in saying that the opening Biblical quotation" (found after the initial eight bound-in color plates) "is from Jeremiah 2:7, and we will make the correction in our next printing." As this Hanes/Seaholm copy is a first printing, it attributes the quotation to "Jeremiah 1:6" -- publisher's letter thus revealing a presumed early printing "point." Price-clipped "very good" jacket exhibits a 5/8ths-inch (1.3 cm.) closed tear to bottom edge of front panel. Not just a catalog of species, but a detailed account of humankind's interaction with the fauna of North America, detailing before the issue received wide currency the role of man in causing the extinction of many species. North American animals, zoology, ecosystems, conservation (or lack thereof.) 304 pp. including index. reduced from $270. Signed by Author(s).
