Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First separate edition. An ex-library copy, bound in contempory 3/4-leather and cloth, with original wrappers bound in (followed by a number of blank leaves). Perforated stamp to pp. 87/88, other usual library marks. Vertical edge of a few pages near beginning a little jagged. Else Very Good. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1933 was awarded to Thomas H. Morgan 'for his discoveries concerning the role played by the chromosome in heredity.' 'The rediscovery of Gregor Mendel's work in 1900 brought questions of evolution and heredity to the fore in biological circles. Morgan began investigations of Mendelian inheritance in 1905, when he started breeding rats and mice (Kohler 1994). In the summer of 1907, he caught a house mouse in Woods Hole with the 'sport,' or mutation, of a pure white belly. 'Later, I caught two more such mice and, in the same closet, another typical house mouse. In the neighborhood, I have caught a few other white-bellied mice,' Morgan reported (which summons a vision of an agile Morgan chasing mice around Woods Hole). Morgan then obtained white-bellied mice from Iowa and New York and began a series of breeding experiments crossing the wild sport with various domesticated races. 'My intention was to familiarize myself at first hand with the process of Mendelian inheritance,' he wrote, by observing the varieties of coat color that his crosses produced (Morgan 1911b, p. 88) [= paper offered here]' (Diana E. Kenney & Gary G. Borisy, 'Thomas Hunt Morgan at the Marine Biological Laboratory: Naturalist and Experimentalist', Genetics, March 2009; 181(3): 841846).

Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. (New York: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc 1929). First US Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION TO FRANCIS JOHN WORSLEY ROUGHTON (1889-1972), PHYSIOLOGIST AND BIOCHEMIST WHO WENT ON TO BECOME PLUMMER PROFESSOR OF COLLOID SCIENCE AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. First appearance, in book form, of the Nobel prize-winning biologist's effort to validate Darwin's theory at a time when it was still heavily contested, even among scientists. Foolscap 8vo (165 x 106mm): xii,13-78,[2]pp. Publisher's blue cloth stamped in red with Norton colophon on upper cover and lettered on spine; red dustwrapper printed in black on heavy stock and priced $1.00. The book itself is in VG condition with some marks to the boards, slight fading to the spine, and softening to the spine tips. Inscribed by the Author to the front free end-paper: "For F. J. W. Roughton/ with the regards/ of T H Morgan/ 3/15 1929". The supplied dustwrapper is about fine with the spine panel lightened a degree or two, but lettering unaffected. Expanded from an essay originally published in The Yale Review, in 1928, and here issued as the seventeenth title of The New Science Series, edited by C. K. Ogden. Soon after it was founded, in 1925, W. W. Norton launched the New Science Series in co-operation with British and German publishers (some titles previously were published in Europe). The series, comprising twenty-one uniform hardcovers issued between 1926 and 1929, was intended to provide lay readers with accessible accounts of up-to-date scientific research. Morgan, who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1933, was one of the most important biologists of the 20th century. His chromosome theory of heredity helped usher in the modern field of genetics. Initially, Morgan rejected Darwinian evolution, even writing a book length critique of the theory, Evolution and Adaptation, in 1903. But his own research with Drosophila ultimately prompted Morgan to reverse course. The dedicatee of the Author's inscription, Francis John Worsley Roughton was a Fellow of the Royal Society. The foundations of Roughton's research career were laid working with H. Hartridge to make the first rapid kinetic measurement on a solution by the mixing method. His interest in his early years was mainly physiology. In 1929 he was Rockefeller travelling fellow in the USA and was back again in America in 1940 at the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, conducting war-related research, chiefly on the effects of carbon monoxide on respiration. Roughton returned to Cambridge at the end of the Second World War and became the second John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Colloid Science (and Head of the Department of Colloid Science. A superb Association Copy. Photographs/scans available upon request. Signed by Author.
