Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Small Quarto Hardcover Book without Jacket, as issued., in Very Good Condition. Contemporary b/w photographic plates. Edited, with an introduction by Michael L. Tate. Two diaries: Crossing the plains to Oregon by Maria Parsons Belshaw. Journey from Indiana to Oregon, journal of George Belshaw by George Belshaw. During the 1840s and 1850s, the Belshaws along with many other American families, made the overland journey to establish new lives in Willamette Valley in western Oregon. Former library book-tag to spine, stamp to upper edge of text block and sticker/stamp on endpaper, all neat and clean. Black cloth with green, metallic, decorative border surrounding gilt titles and decoration. Quite attractive. Slight wear to very tips of corners, a bit more to spine head and heel, a tiny nick to fore-edge, center. Solid sewn binding. Pages completely clean and unmarked, no creases. Diary entries from trip leader George Belshaw and his sister-in-law, Maria A. Parsons Belshaw include personal thoughts and precise information on such things as camping sites, water supply, wood sources, bridges and ferries, Indian relations, miles traveled each day, much practical advice. They apparently had no plans to publish and for that reason their writing retain an unpolished quality that adds to their historical reliability. Includes a Colophon describing printing and binding particulars. 10.25 x 7.25 inches. 134 pages. 2000, Ye Galleon Press, Fairfield, Washington.
