The National African American Museum's inaugural exhibition, Imagining Families: Images and Voices, was curated, in part, as a response to the many Americans who had contacted the Smithsonian Institution to express their interest in making a meaningful contribution to the then-planned National African American Museum. This is a visual testimonial to the 15 artists whose photographs demand that we consider familial relationships and the roles that individuals play in communities. This visual testimonial exhibition allows each viewer to step inside a community that may be different from one's own, and confront a world that can pose the same challenges for each of us.
