The art featured in the catalogue ranges from Minimalist sculptures to examples of various schools of painting in the 1980s, 1990s, and recent works—from stylistic developments in photography, video, and multimedia installations to the renewed enthusiasm for figurative painting. Highlighting works by Donald Judd, Carl Andre, John Baldessari, Lawrence Weiner, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Elizabeth Murray, Julian Schnabel, Gerhard Richter, Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, Mike Kelley, Tony Oursler, Robert Gober, Rachel Whiteread, Luc Tuymans, Vija Celmins, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, among others, this book demonstrates the richness and diversity in style, medium, and form of contemporary art.
In addition to full-color reproductions of more than forty-eight artworks, the book includes an essay by guest curator Sheryl Conkelton, texts on each of the artists by Conkelton and Elizabeth Thomas, Carnegie Museum of Art’s assistant curator of contemporary art, and an introduction by museum Director Richard Armstrong.
An International Legacy has been published by the American Federation of Arts to accompany an exhibition of the same name that is originated and organized by the AFA and curated by Ms. Conkelton. Following its opening at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (May 16–August 10, 2003), the exhibition will travel to the Nevada Museum of Art (January 9–April 4, 2004) and the Mobile Museum of Art, Alabama (January 7–April 3, 2005). The exhibition is made possible, in part, by a grant from The Henry L. Hillman Foundation. Additional support has been provided by the Founders Circle of the AFA.
