Besides The Goon 's supporting cast of aliens, creature-people, and zombies, the spirit of Frank Miller's notorious Sin City hovers around Powell's crime-sf-horror concoction. The Goon 's city is as evil, its violence is as over the top, its baddies are as annoyingly self-resurrecting, and its characters look as grotesque as their counterparts in Miller's creation. But while Sin City is profoundly creepy, and liking it is partly a matter of soul-searching as to why it's so alluring, The Goon is wildly funny, a Bronx cheer in the face of the genre conventions it mercilessly rags. Here, in addition to the usual targets, Powell lampoons the football melodrama, the hellhole-prison drama, sf parallel-world high jinks, and A Christmas Carol. He rivals the great early MAD in uniting goofy writing and goofy drawing, as if he were Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Davis in one body.
