Dr. Steven L. Layne is a full-time professor of literacy education at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois, where he teaches courses in children's and adolescent literature and directs the university's Master of Education in Literacy program. He also serves as a national literacy consultant, featured author, and motivational keynote speaker at conferences and workshops throughout the world. He is the author of more than a dozen picture books published by Pelican, including the International Reading Association/Children's Choices selections My Brother Dan's Delicious and The Teachers' Night Before Christmas, one of the best-selling books in The Night Before Christmas Series. To the series, he also contributed Preacher's Night Before Christmas and The Principal's Night Before Christmas. His picture book Over Land and Sea is a personally inspired celebration of international adoption. Layne is also the author of Teachers' Night Before Halloween, Thomas's Sheep and the Great Geography Test, Thomas's Sheep and the Spectacular Science Project, Love the Baby, Share with Brother, and Stay with Sister, all geared toward children. For a middle-reader audience, he has authored This Side of Paradise, which won the 2001 Hal Clement Award for Young Adult Science Fiction; Paradise Lost; and Mergers. For parents, he has also penned a collection of poems in tribute to fathers, Verses for Dad's Heart. He lives with his wife and children in Saint Charles, Illinois.
