"Just the thing to make it yumbo,
All a part of Grandma's gumbo."
In this delightful rhyming story, authentic Louisiana ingredients--like shrimp, oysters, bell peppers, and okra--all find their way into Grandma's big black pot. With the addition of some hot sauce and a dash of fil, this traditional Creole dish is ready--to be enjoyed by all!
Like Deborah Ousley Kadair's first book, There Was an Ol' Cajun, Grandma's Gumbo features simple collage-style illustrations and an infectious poetic rhythm that will enchant readers of all ages. There is even a recipe for gumbo, just like Grandma's, that readers can make at home.
Author and illustrator Deborah Ousley Kadair received wide acclaim for her first book, There Was an Ol' Cajun, which was based on the classic nursery rhyme There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly. In order to write Grandma's Gumbo, she drew on her own family's Cajun heritage. She is the illustrator for Today Is Monday in Louisiana, written by her friend, Louisiana singer/songwriter Johnette Downing. Trained in the Montessori teaching method, Mrs. Kadair also conducts storytelling and illustration workshops for children. A native of Louisiana, she lives in Cedar Park, Texas.
