K-Gr. 2. These titles in the Useful Machines series introduce younger readers to the basic mechanics and functions of simple machines. The books begin with brief, straightforward explanations of what the machine is, what it does, and how it works, followed by illustrations showing the machine working in a variety of real-life situations. In Levers, examples such a fulcrum, a mop, and a power shovel are used to show how levers are incorporated into various tools and other everyday objects. Pulleys uses the examples of a clothesline, flagpole, and motor. Accompanying the text are frequent color photographs of a person using the tool that is discussed. New vocabulary words are highlighted in bold in the text and defined in a glossary. These informative introductions will satisfy the curiosity of young readers. Suggestions for further reading close both books. Ed Sullivan
