What happens when a modern day princess asks National Geographic photographer Justin Guariglia and veteran Wall Street Journal reporter John Krich to chronicle and capture all the color and complexities of a critical, yet little-known corner of the Orient? The stunning result is Johor: Asia Latitude One, offering hours of pleasure for armchair explorers and a rare view of a magical realm's remarkable variety of humanity. Packaged by de.MO's acclaimed graphic designer Giorgio Baravalle in a contemporary style, this gem of photojournalism is plucked from the sun-lit balm of a realm whose very name means, "jewel land."

About the Author:
JUSTIN GUARIGLIA

Born in 1974 in Maplewood, New Jersey, Justin Guariglia now resides in Taipei, Taiwan. Guariglia has previously lived in Venice, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, and New York City.

His work revolves around the experience of travel, and foreign cultures, from the viewpoint of the lone traveler.

His first book, entitled Shaolin: Temple of Zen was published by the Aperture Foundation of New York in October of 2007, and accompanied by a 99 piece internationally travelling exhibition, also produced by Aperture. The book and exhibition feature the notoriously guarded Shaolin Temple, which is the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and martial arts. Guariglia is the first foreign photographer allowed to document the real monks of Shaolin in the 1500-year-old temple's history.

His second book, entitled Planet Shanghai, published in Spring 2008 by Chronicle Books of San Francisco, looks at daily life in and around the old, and quickly disappearing, long tang / li long or back alley communal living quarters of Shanghai, China. The book was selected by American Photo magazine as one of the best photography books of 2008.

Guariglia was nominated for the International Center of Photography's Young Photographer Infinity Award, received two Photo of the Year awards, and was named by Photo District News as one of the top "30 Young Photographers under 30."
