About the Author:
Michael Dorn is one of the nation s most experienced, best-known and highly credentialed school safety experts. He served with a university police department for 10 years prior to his appointment as chief of police for a large school district. During his 10 year tenure as police chief, his department was featured as a model program by many organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education. In 1999, he was appointed as the lead technical expert for the nation s largest state government school safety center. He worked in that capacity until April 2003 when he accepted a key position in a state emergency management agency anti-terrorism unit. He is also the Executive Director of Safe Havens International Inc., a nonprofit safety center. He has served on numerous government task forces and fact-finding committees and has provided technical assistance on numerous video, manual, and web-based training programs.

He has authored and co-authored 18 books on school safety and has been featured in 10 training videos that are now in use by police and school officials in more than 20 countries. He writes columns for Campus Safety Journal, School Planning and Management, Today s School, School Transportation News, and College Planning and Management magazines. He also writes regularly for LRP Publication s Maintaining Safe Schools. He has been frequently interviewed by major news organizations including Good Morning America, Tokyo Broadcasting, The New York Times, and The Associated Press.

He has completed a certificate program in management development, a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in history and political science and a Masters degree in service administration at Mercer University. He has completed more than 18 months of police academy and emergency management training and holds five advanced certifications from the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. He graduated from the 181st session of the FBI National Academy and was selected for a fellowship with Georgia State University to train in Israel through the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Program (GILEE). During this intensive program, he received training on antiterrorism and counterterrorism from the Israel Police, Israel Defense Forces, and the Mossad.

The multi-disciplinary threat management and home search techniques developed by the author and his colleagues have been used to successfully thwart several dozen planned school shootings and bombings in the United States.

Michael Dorn is a regular presenter at professional conferences around the country and conducts intensive advanced training for school districts and private schools. The author can be reached by e-mail at mike@weakfish.org.
