Grade 2-5-An engaging and diverse collection of 15 folktales gathered from Europe and the Middle East, many of which are from the Israel Folktale Archive. Far from traditional Biblical narratives, these tales incorporate everything from the magical to the bizarre, all the while imparting specific Jewish values that have transcended time and cultural dispersion. From the enchanting Egyptian tale "The Queen of the Sea" to the thematically familiar "The Fisherman and the Silver Fish," each story is carefully documented and its significance explained within the context of Jewish teachings. In addition, each retelling opens with a delightfully detailed pen-and-ink illustration encircled by a key sentence or phrase from the text that gives a hint of what's to come.
