Grade 3-6 --Designed to pique the interest of children about both the typical and the extraordinary, these books introduce independent readers to the how and why of things often taken for granted. With their multitude of full-color photographs and generally clear texts, the books take readers on a behind-the-scenes look at some unusual places. The scientifically minded will enjoy A Space Camp , which takes readers to the U. S. Space Camp at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. It's unfortunate that there's no address or phone number where future astronauts can find more information. A Spaghetti Factory is a lighthearted look at the growth and processing of durum wheat into semolina, the major ingredient in pasta. The most fascinating aspects of this title are the photographs of the different dies used to create all the different shapes of pasta and the lines of lasagna and spaghetti in the dryers. A Super Zoo is the most appealing, as children learn about how zoo workers care for the thousands of animals at the San Diego Zoo. The photographs of everything from baby anteaters to zebras are irresistible. More importantly, the text emphasizes the care of endangered animals and the conservation of all plant and wildlife. While A Bicycle Factory is technically correct in its description of how bicycles are designed, tested and manufactured, the text is dry and will hold little interest for most children.
