From Library Journal:
Written by four practicing physicians associated with the faculties of the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, this accessible volume is keyed to the latest revision of professional psychiatry's diagnostic manual (DSM-IV-R, 2000). The result is a one-stop-shopping approach to mental health that covers an impressive array of mental disorders. The text, which is well organized and reliable (it uses the same disorder headings as the DSM-IV-R), reflects the point of view that mental health is grounded in each individual's genetic endowment and life experiences. Entries include symptoms, affected groups, onset and course of the illness, and treatments divided into self-help materials and professional approaches. Specific medications are not listed. Congruent with its goal of educating a wide audience in mental health issues, the book provides the etymology of psychiatric terms, and it boasts a liberal use of classical quotes. Its selection of additional sources (books, videos, and web sites) is well chosen. A useful first source of guidance and consultation for nonprofessionals, this is recommended for public libraries and collections serving counselors and health educators.
