About the Author:
Sarah L. Thomson has published more than twenty-five books for young readers. She has created fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose, fantasy and realism for age levels from kindergarten through high school. Her books include an adventure about two friends who rescue a dragon’s egg; a picture-book biography of Abraham Lincoln; and a young readers’ version of the best-selling title Three Cups of Tea; along with poetry for picture- book readers and nonfiction I Can Read! titles about tigers, whales, sharks, gorillas, and snakes. This adaptation of the classic counting rhyme Over in the Meadow is set in a bucolic neighborhood environment. Opening with Around the neighborhood, / inside a room full of sun, / lived a happy, laughing mother / and her little baby one, the stanzas proceed through various outdoor settings and feature different parent-baby animals, which increase in number by spread. For instance, there’s an old father hound dog with his little puppies two and an old mother ladybug and her little beetles five. The counting doesn’t end with 10, but returns to the now-tired mother and little baby one, who is sound asleep. Christy’s digitally rendered, brightly colored illustrations are evocative and soothing. While the rhymes and rhythms are occasionally awkward, the human element is a nice, cozy touch and emphasizes the universality of parent-child relationships. On the final spread, there are 10 small vignettes featuring the animals, thereby reinforcing the numbers lesson. An appended author’s note gives background on the original song and musical notation.
