This book is divided into four parts. Part 1 places the Old Testament and its people in geographical, social, and political context. Part 2 reconstructs the history of Israel using sound historical method. And while Part 3 breaks down the Old Testament into genres, subjecting each to literary analysis, Part 4 tells how the Old Testament was formed. There is nothing new here, but that isn't the point; the authors' purpose is to teach the essentials of modern biblical scholarship. Clearly written, and clarified by numerous photographs and charts, the text is aimed at lay readers and will enhance their understanding, not of the scholarship, but of the Old Testament itself. Recommended for all biblical collections, though this is not for literalists.
