A moving, humorous and beautifully observed tale set in the Victorian music-hall world.

Their parents away, brother and sister Clarrie and Will must live with their Uncle Len, a ventriloquist on the Victorian music-hall stage whose dummy, Frozen Billy, gives Clarrie the creeps. Soon Will is part of the act and Clarrie is scared that Frozen Billy is taking over their family. Can she find the determination and courage to break free from their uncle, and help her family set off for a new life in Australia?

With Anne Fine’s terrific characters and sharply observed dialogue, this is a beautifully written tale about two young people with real dreams who struggle not to be destroyed by made-up dreams on a stage.

From the Hardcover edition.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6–A story set in Edwardian England. Clarrie and Will's dad is in Australia trying to earn enough money to send for his family. Their mum goes to Ireland for a funeral, where she is mistakenly imprisoned for theft. This leaves the children in the care of alcoholic Uncle Len, a ventriloquist. He and his doll aren't getting many laughs these days, so he encourages Will to dress as Frozen Billy's twin. They become the lead act. In a series of notebooks, Clarrie recounts the gradual change in Will from exuberant younger brother to cold, brittle performer. Clarrie is frightened when he begins talking to creepy Frozen Billy at night. She realizes that he needs rescuing and hatches an elaborate plan. Good Clarrie is able to plot their getaway precisely because no one expects it of her. This melodrama strains credulity but conveys a real sense of the disturbing changes in the characters. Will and Uncle Len spiral into bitterness and detachment, while Clarrie finds a tenacity and cleverness in herself that was previously unknown. Rough black-and-white drawings give a sense of the vaudeville theater and the period. As usual, Fine creates fascinating characters, an intense impression of time and place, and a fast-paced plot.–B. Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Two children are drawn into helping with a ventriloquist's act in this creepy Victorian tale from multi-award-winning author Anne Fine.'I hate Frozen Billy - his painted, staring wooden eyes, the way his eyelids click when Uncle Len pulls a string, his long thin legs and his bright red wooden mouth . . . 'Clarrie and Will live with their Uncle Len - a brilliant ventriloquist in the nearby music hall. But though Len loves his act almost as much as he loves his beer, Top Billing is out of his grasp until Will thinks up a way to double the drama with a new act and some extraordinary new patter that he and Frozen Billy can share on stage. It's a grand idea, hatched in hope and excitement. But, to Clarrie's horror, soon it begins to turn terribly sour . . .Anne Fine's novel combines her trademark humour, engaging characters and flawless prose to produce a spooky adventure set in the late-Victorian world of the music hall. Clarrie is determined to save her family when Uncle Len recruits her younger brother to help him with his ventriloquist act on the music-hall stage. For slowly but surely, it seems as if Will is turning into another dummy -another Frozen Billy.
