Solomon's Secret - Hardcover

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Solomon's reclusive neighbors, the Zees, seem mysterious to most of the neighborhood, but Solomon discovers their secret--a magic teakettle--on a visit during which he and Mr. Zee follow panda, tiger, and roadrunner tracks to China, India, and the American West to get special treats for tea. While the story necessarily condenses each culture visited to a few representative people and foods, Cooper's expressive illustrations broaden the scope and enable readers' imagination to bridge easily the gap between the British city neighborhood and the relatively exotic places visited. Unfortunately, the story line is weaker than the illustrations. The connection between the kettle and the trips is not really clear. While it is suggested that Solomon and Mr. Zee must return before the water boils, when they do return, tea is ready. American children may wonder at a bakery in the middle of a desert selling pumpkin pie (and with a top crust!). Although the visit to India names both clothing and a monetary unit, the others do not.
