From Library Journal:
Proper diet and exercise are important components of a diabetes management program. Each of these books offers sensible, authoritative, and practical information for diabetics, and can be used as guides to healthy living by nondiabetics as well. Most of the UCSD Healthy Diet for Diabetics is devoted to low-fat, reduced-sodium, and high-fiber recipes for snacks, soups, salads, whole-grain breads, and main dishes both meatless and with meat. Dishes are adapted from a variety of international cuisines and use, on occasion, exotic ingredients such as blue cornmeal. The authors, dieticians on the faculty of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) General Clinical Research Center, also include information on eating in restaurants, meal planning, and, briefly, exercise and blood glucose monitoring. Diabetes Actively Staying Healthy was written by two exercise specialists at the International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis. It is a comprehensive fitness manual for all diabetics, even insulin-dependent individuals participating in competitive sports. The chapter arrangement and repetition of key facts makes this book useful for both the beginner and the fitness enthusiast. Exercise routines are illustrated with photographs. Although the menus in the UCSD book are not as extensive as those prepared by the American Diabetes Association, both titles are excellent additions to consumer health collections.
