John Connolly’s The Boys from Siam has been chosen as the first winner of the Yale Drama Series. This play was selected by playwright and contest judge Edward Albee, winner of the Pulitzer prize. Based loosely on the lives of nineteenth-century brothers Chang and Eng Bunker (the source of the term “Siamese twins”), The Boys from Siam is the haunting and lyrical story of conjoined twins Pigg and Pegg. In his foreword, Edward Albee writes that the work is “a beautifully realized concentrated universe. It takes big chances along the way . . . and makes us care—really care.”

John Austin Connolly lives and writes in Dublin. His previous works have been showcased at the Kilkenny Arts Festival and the Dublin Temple Bar Arts Festival. A recent short story has been short-listed for the 2007 Francis MacManus short story competition in Ireland.
Irish playwright Connolly won the inaugural Yale Drama Series David C. Horn Prize with this moody, darkly poetic two-person play inspired by the lives of the original Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker. In this fascinating, literate drama, the two brothers are called Pigg and Pegg, names that recall the main characters in Beckett’s Endgame. Like Beckett’s Hamm and Clov, Pigg and Pegg battle with the Beckettian paradox: they are alternately tired of living and scared of dying. But again like Beckett, Connolly uses literate wit and a gift for simple but evocative stage pictures to make his sometimes bleak vision palatable. The published play includes a vitriolic introduction by another master of bleak, absurdist theater, Edward Albee, in which he spends as much time attacking the surfeit of timidity and mediocrity in contemporary theater as he does explaining why, of all the entries he and his readers perused, he chose this one. --Jack Helbig
