An Elephant Came to Swim - Hardcover

Kindergarten-Grade 2 Sekuru's lovely hotel on a lush hill in Zimbabwe seems to have everything it needs to attract tourists, except the tourists themselves. Mister Ellie, the galumphing elephant hero , arrives one day and puts on a show in the swimming pool. This soon draws a crowd of families onto the veranda to celebrate and watch the performance. Children will appreciate the innocent wisdom of Mister Ellie, who curiously observes the cars arriving and waiters scurrying again at last, as Sekuru comments: ``We are the animals now, he's watching us.'' As the sun goes down, the elephant waves his trunk and walks away from the hotel that has been brought to life again by his visit. Brightly colored illustrations enhance the slightly British but well-chosen language. A good choice for an unusual read-aloud with a fluid plot and a cheerful ending. Karen D.
